The project will provide environmental education to pupils who will be involved in the identification, reintroduction of species (crucian carp, sunbleak) and monitoring of suitable habitats. Project implementation period: January 2024 - November 2025. The expert guarantor of the project is RNDr. Marek \u0160mejkal, Ph.D. Biological Centre of the CAS, the project ambassador is Mgr. Vladim\u00edr Ko\u0159en, the presenter of the Czech Television show \"Nature's Wonders\" and teacher of the 3rd Primary School \"U \u0158\u00ed\u010dansk\u00e9ho lesa\" in \u0158\u00ed\u010dany. We will gradually bring news and videos from the activities implemented in the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Environmental education for pupils<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of theoretical education, lessons (2 x 45 minutes) were held in winter 2024 with pupils from six partner primary schools \u2013 Z\u0160 U \u0158\u00ed\u010dansk\u00e9ho lesa; Z\u0160 Komensk\u00e9ho, Trutnov; Z\u0160 \u017deletice; Z\u0160 Volgogradsk\u00e1, Ostrava-Z\u00e1b\u0159eh; Z\u0160 Star\u00e9 M\u011bsto; Z\u0160 Bojkovice. The lectures dealt with biodiversity and its decline, with an emphasis on freshwater ecosystems. The issues of climate change and invasive fish species and their impact on our native fish species were presented, with a focus on the critically endangered crucian carp and sunbleak. The pupils also learned about ways to protect these species and biodiversity in general. The pupils were then involved in a discussion and learned how to construct food webs through an educational game with magnets representing species living in a pond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1330\" src=\"https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-02_kolaz-1-scaled.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5923\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-02_kolaz-1-scaled.png 2560w, https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-02_kolaz-1-768x399.png 768w, https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-02_kolaz-1-1536x798.png 1536w, https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-02_kolaz-1-2048x1064.png 2048w, https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-02_kolaz-1-18x9.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Site monitoring<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2024, pupils from the same primary schools (see above) were involved in mapping pre-selected locations in the vicinity of their schools. Each class was given a monitoring kit (i.e. a rucksack filled with the necessary monitoring equipment) and a \u201eHunting Day\u201c worksheet. First, abiotic parameters were measured. Then the pupils were tasked with identifying the animals and plants living there. This task was conceived as a competition, and the winning team won T-shirts with the project logo. The pupils really enjoyed this exercise and had the opportunity to develop a positive attitude towards biodiversity conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1308\" src=\"https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-03_kolaz-1-scaled.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5936\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-03_kolaz-1-scaled.png 2560w, https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-03_kolaz-1-768x392.png 768w, https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-03_kolaz-1-1536x785.png 1536w, https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-03_kolaz-1-2048x1046.png 2048w, https:\/\/zachrankarase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/KA-03_kolaz-1-18x9.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Repatriation of critically endangered fish species<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common crucian carp (and, in the case of the primary school in \u0158\u00ed\u010dany, common sunfish) were repatriated to selected locations in the vicinity of schools. At the primary school U \u0158\u00ed\u010dansk\u00e9ho lesa, common crucian carp were released into the school pond set up for this purpose and into two pools near the school. A suitable pond was found near the primary school in Trutnov, where crucian carp already occur, and pupils had the opportunity to participate in its management. Crucian carp were also planted in the ponds of the primary schools in \u017deletice and Star\u00e9 M\u011bsto, Fr\u00fddek-M\u00edstek district. The pupils assessed their current condition and determined whether the fish that had been released had successfully reproduced and whether the species composition of animals and plants had changed. They recorded the results in a prepared \u201eBiodiversity Monitoring\u201c protocol. The fish planted at all sites are doing very well; they have adapted well to their new environment, are actively reproducing, and their populations are growing steadily, indicating the success of the repatriation measures and the favourable condition of the monitored ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pupils from another primary school (Dobrovsk\u00e9ho Lan\u0161kroun Primary School) also took part in the repatriation of common crucian carp, successfully releasing their farmed fish into ponds near \u0158\u00ed\u010dany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the awareness campaign, several events were held with the aim of informing the general public about the impact of anthropogenic changes on the landscape and the associated loss of biodiversity, while also showing that schoolchildren can actively participate in protecting and saving endangered species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-action-semi-dark-color\">For Fishing Fair (20\u201323 February 2025)<\/mark><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An interactive activity with magnets was prepared for the children, during which we discussed how a pond changes when invasive silver crucian carp invade it. The children observed how the invasive species affects the food chain and the lives of other fish and plants in the pond. Another part of the activity was finding the differences between common crucian carp and silver carp, where the children learned to recognise native and invasive species by their appearance and characteristics. The children proved to be very skilled in both activities, and at the end, they all received diplomas and stickers with the \u201eSave the Crucian Carp\u201c logo as a reward for their active participation and efforts to learn about nature conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children had the opportunity to participate in competitions and win various prizes, such as T-shirts, bottles, badges, pens, knives, and caps, all bearing the \u201eSave the Crucian Carp\u201c logo. The competitions motivated children to actively participate and also allowed them to win prizes reminding them of the importance of protecting native fish species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-action-semi-dark-color\">Instructional videos<\/mark><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several teaching materials were also created as part of the awareness campaign. It also includes an introductory overview of the global loss of freshwater biodiversity due to anthropogenic change and how to support it. The children learned to recognise which fish belong in our waters and which can have a negative impact on local ecosystems. They actively participated in games in which they sorted fish and caught wooden fish using homemade fishing rods. The children learned why it is important to protect native species and care for the aquatic environment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-action-semi-dark-color\">Final conference for teachers<\/mark><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2025, the final conference of the project for teachers took place at the 3rd elementary school U \u0158\u00ed\u010dansk\u00e9ho lesa. It included a lecture by Dr. \u0160mejkal and Mgr. Ko\u0159ena, a practical demonstration of catching fish at the school pond and a subsequent discussion. The students were actively involved in all planned activities and showed interest in the topics throughout the project. They participated in lessons focused on biodiversity and nature conservation, which were complemented by discussions and interactive learning games. These activities contributed to a better understanding of the importance of protecting aquatic ecosystems and native species. Practical field activities were also an important part of the project, specifically involving pupils in the repatriation of critically endangered fish species in the Czech Republic, namely the common bream and, in the case of one site, the common sunfish. Thanks to this experience, the pupils were able to directly experience how the protection of endangered species is carried out in practice and realized the importance of an active approach to nature conservation. They also learned basic methods of biodiversity monitoring and gained insight into the conservation options for our native, water-dependent animals. Thus, the project contributed not only to expanding their knowledge, but also to developing environmental awareness and a responsible relationship with nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another project objective, which was to raise awareness on the issue of freshwater biodiversity loss and its main causes, was also successfully met.
